Vlog 5

Hello it's Hannah. Today we are going to talk about audience impact, representation, legal and ethical issues and regulatory bodies, in terms of Fantastic four.
First I am going to talk about audience impact. There are two theory's hypodermic syringe this is a theory from Theodore Adore (1930). This is the theory that media has a negative impact. That the mass audience will believe everything they see and could not filter it out. This is when a audience is passive, Because they have no choice to filter out the information the media gives them.
The second theory is that the audience can filter out the media and adapt form it. This links to Gauntles theory that an audience is able to use the media for their own purposes. This is know as an active audience, This is how these two theory's tie into Fantastic 4  The character the human torch is seen as a cool impressive character that has it all. So for young children they may feel that they should set themselves on fire. However this is very unlikely. The character of Mr Fantastic is a role model because he protects and saves the city. This encourages children to be kind and help others. For girls watching the movie and seeing Jessica Alba in her underwear, then she gets her dream man. The girls may think that they have to show more of their body to get attention from boys.
Now on to representation
Superheroes, women and men are being represented in the film. The character the invisible woman is as stereotype because she has blonde hair big boobs and wears tight fitting clothes. She is seen as an ideal partner. This stereotype fits with Mulvely theory that women are objectified in the media . (1975) The other stereotype of the representation of men, Earp and Katz 1999 said 'equation of masculinity with pathological control and violence this refers to the Human torch. Mr fantastic falls into Perkins theory (1979) that not all stereotypes are negative. This is because Mr fantastic is a superhero ad saves the city. Hall (1980) said that all representations are mediated. So characters are changed to the appeal to the audience and make them feel a certain way.
Next I'm going to talk about legal and ethical
For the soundtrack of Fantastic Four, 20th Century Fox wouldn't of wanted to have copyright issues. So they will have gained approval from record companies and producers to use their content. some exampled of the songs are Everything Burns by Ben Moodand Goodbye to You by Justin Rimer and Brett Erickson. There is no explicit language or adult themes, so nothing that they could get offended for. Also there are no racial issues.
Fianly regulatory bodies. The movie fantastic 4 is a PG, this is a rating set by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification). The rating means that the film should not upset anyone who is eight or older and the content is not too explicit or disturbing, but does contain mild violent themes. ASA (the advertising standards authority) have made guidelines for advertising, so that adverts are not offensive. So posters for Fantastic 4 could not show violent or sexual images. The main poster is of the main charters. This has no offensive images in ti that is why it was used.
Till next time! bye.

Hey it's Hannah again from Cheese Media, and today we are going to talk about distribution and advertising in the movie Fantastic Four. Because the movie was such a high budget, it needs to be advertised well so the movie and make a good profit.
So let’s focus on distribution.
There are many different ways Fantastic Four was distributed. There are obvious ones like the cinema, DVD's and TV. This is known as analogue methods, which means old media. Then there are digital methods this is new media. Examples of new media are online streaming services like Netflix, also on demand services like Virgin On Demand and there are also illegal sites like pirate bay. These are computerized; the people that use these types of media to watch movies are most likely digital natives. Now digital natives are people that were born after 1995 and grew up with the Internet. With this form of distribution the audience can voice their opinion of the media product. This links to David Gauntlett (2002) he discussed the rise of Web 2.0. This is the change in the Internet being static to a two way interactive medium. To simplify the Internet was originally only one sided so users of it couldn't contribute to it, then it changes so everyone can contribute to the Internet. That’s why it’s called 2.0. Now lets look at Fantastic Fours distribution. In the cinema the movie made £330,717,080 from the worldwide box office. Which already is a huge amount not including DVD and download profit. So the roughly the overall profit of the movie is £154,696,808. The movie was released in UK cinemas on the 8th of July in the USA. It was shown on channel 4. Fantastic 4 is on Love Film and Sky. Also it is available for illegal download. It was released on DVD on the December 6th 2005 in the UK. It is still available on sites like Amazon and Ebay. Also it is available on On Demand sites like Virgin.
Now lets talk about advertising.
Like distribution there are may ways a film can be advertised. Again there are new media forms like digital billboards and online reviews. The old media forms are magazines and other forms of print advertising; also there is merchandise and press events. Fantastic Four premièred in The Vue cinema on Leicester Square in London. On the 28th of July 2005. There was a blue carpet because the characters costumes are blue. It gained the movie a lot of attention. Along with the billboards and posters.
The cinema The Vue has a collaboration with 20h Century Fox so that the cinemas get paid to advertise and show the film. Advertising is a key part of making a movie. The more advertising it gets, the more people will see the movie finally the movie will make more profit. Because 20th century Fox is a conglomerate it has subsidiaries that it can use to advertise the movie e.g. advertising it in the sun. Empire have reviewed the film in their magazine in 2005. Also it has been review on online sites such as Rottern Tomatos and IDMB. The trailer was released in 2005. The trailer is available on you tube and is appealing because it doesn't give all of the narrative away. So hopefully you understand distribution and advertising. See you next time!

Vlog 3

Hello its Hannah again. I'm here today to talk about target audience! The movie Fantastic Four is a action. So it appeals to men. This is stereotypical of men to enjoy action movies more than women. This links with Rick Altman's theory (1999) different genres offer different pleasures.
The action genre gives escapism to the audience. Men like to be in action. In this clip of action you can see the antagonist  Victor Von Doom terrorising the street  So this is why the target audience is male. Also because the film was originally a comic strip. Traditionally mostly men read comics. So the men that have read the comics will want to see the movie to compare. Another reason that men will like this movie is because of Richard Dyers (1975) theory of star persona. In the movie is the actress Jessica Alba and she is seen as an ideal partner and men are attracted to her. Also the men are seen as the role models because they save New York.
Now on to age, the target age range is 9-15 this is because the movie doesn't have a complex narrative. So its easy for younger people to understand. Also it is aimed to families that everyone will enjoy it. Younger children like action and light humour.
Lets move on to spending power. Now you're probably wondering what it is. Well spending power is the money people have free to spend that doesn't effect their standard of living. There are 6 categorise that people fall into, A,B,C1,C2,D and E. The ABC1 group have more disposable income, so media marketers try and aim at this target audience. This is because they are more likely to be able to afford the movie and all the merchandise that goes along with it. So Fantastic 4 is aimed at A,B,C1 and C2. This is because they want family's that have enough money to be able to afford to film and merchandise. Because the film is high budget, it needs to bring back a lot of profit.
The NRS have set up a demographic of peoples life style ranging from 'affluent achievers' to 'unclassifiable'. So Fantastic 4 falls under the demographics of  C- settled suburban's, E- urban ventures, F- county life and I- hard pressed family's. This is because it is an action family film with a narrative that appeals to adults and children. The movie is suitable for everyone so its a family friendly film. Also because a family can watch it together it means the children will want the merchandise and the parents are more likely to buy it because they enjoy the film.
Ien Ang (1991) said that producers have imaginary intites of before creating a media product. They create imaginary people to aim there product for.
Felix is 12. He enjoys playing with his friends outside. He loves playing with his toy guns and action figures. He has a passion for everything Marvel. He one day hopes to own all the Marvel merchandise. His room is filled with Marvel movies and merchandise. His life ambitions are to meet Stan Lee and one day become a superhero and save the world. His family life is good. He has a little brother and he is trying to get him to become Marvel obsessed as well. Also his mum encourages his love of the movies by buying him the merchandise. Felix and his friends play Marvel games. They pretend to be the characters and use their superpowers to save others.

Vlog 2

Hey, it's Hannah again. Today we're going to talk about the movie fantastic four. The purpose of the blockbuster movie is to entertain. This is because it's a spectacle and it has special effects which makes people want to watch it. The genre is a scifi action hybrid . This is because the movie has special effects superpowers and an action story line. The form is a feature film. This is because it is longer than 40 minuets. The style is unrealistic and modern. The costumes are futuristic because they match the powers, which we don’t have the technology to do now. They have make up that makes the thing look like a rock. The costumes match the powers of the superheroes.

The narrative is a group of astronauts go out to discover more of space then they are explodes to cosmic radiation. Then it gives them powers. One of the astronauts turns evil from the radiation and wants all the powers. So the plot is that they are at war with him. clause Levi Strousses (1958) talked about binary opposition. Fantastic Four has binary opposition because it is a fight between good and bad. Also the movie fits into Todarov's theory (1977) because everything is fine, then there is conflict finally there is calm because the villain is beaten. I will now be talking about mise-en-scene in terms of content, meaning and production. Also how this creates an understanding for the audience about the story. Now you're probably wondering what mise-en-scene is. So just to clarify mise-en-scene is how the story is told how it is shown and arranged.

The location is New York. New York has iconography of urban life and is a very popular place, this makes the audience want to be in New York. The location would've been chosen in pre-production, because it is an important part. So the set could've been designed around the place.
When choosing characters they would've wanted to create likeable characters so they can appeal to a bigger range of audiences. Having a muscly man will appeal to the girls. Then they have a good-looking girl to appeal to the men watching.
There are super hero gestures. This is preferred reading because the audience will know from the gesture that the characters have super powers. The gestures and characters would've been decided in the pre-production process.
The costumes and make-up are super hero costumes. These would've been designed to appeal to the target audience. The stereotypical costumes are slim fitting. So when the audience sees the costume they know it is a costume. Make up is a very important part because it can completely change an actors face. Make up is used to make characters look a certain way The design and making of the costume and the planning of the make up would've been done in pre-production.
Now on to props, movies use props to contribute something to the movie. For example in the movie it denotes a bottle of wine, this is used for the characters to find out their powers. So when Mr. Fantastic catches the wine glass, the audience can see his arm extent. The props would've been decided in pre-production.
Finally on to lighting. lighting is used to show power. the light is at the bottom of the characters this connotes power. When the audience sees this lighting angle they will know that it means strength and power  because of of the iconography linked to it. 1-30
All of the mise-en-scene characteristic would've been decided in pre-production.

Camera work
Now on to camera work There is a close up of the invisible woman when she is holding back the force field. This close up is used to show the audience her facial expression. this makes the audience empathies with her because she is in pain. Also the fact that it is a close up when she is using a force field. this is important because it shows the audience that it’s hard for her to control it, and adds to the narrative . Panning shot is used to establish the location also it is used to show all of the action that is going. It means that the audience is able to see every thing that is happening. It is used to show the chaos on the bridge. A low angle is used to show power and dominance. because the camera is low and looking up. From the audiences perceptive the character looks powerful. It is used when the thing came out to help the people on the bridge. The camera work would have been decided in preproduction

Editing
A shot reverse shot is used. this is when two people are having a conversation and the camera is used to show both their faces when one of them is talking. This looks very natural to the audience. It is used to make the conversation look natural. This is used when Reed and Sue are having a conversation.
Also CGI is used to give the characters superpowers. this makes it more believable for the audience.  The editing techniques would have been decided in preproduction.
Sound
At the beginning when the spaceship is revealed there is nondigetic sound.  Which is dramatic music. This makes the reveal look more dramatic. Also the music is used to introduce to space ship.
When the thing is pulling back the fire truck digetic foley sound is used.  This makes the movie have more verisimilitude. It adds to the narrative because by hearing the sound the audience can tell what is happening. At the end the Thing flips over a car and there is digetic sound of women screaming this is used to show the audience that the situation is scary.  Because of preferred reading the audience will know that it is scary. Also the screaming adds to the narrative because the scream was because of the action. Sounds like this would have been decided in the preproduction stages.

Vlog 1

Hey my name is Hannah I work for the company cheese media. I'll be analysing the film company 20th Century Fox. We will be looking at ownership, operating model, products, market position and competitors. But first we need to learn key terms; conglomerate is a big company made up of smaller companies that are called subsidiaries, and example of this is Disney and CBS. A independent company is one that is not owned by another company, it operates and makes products by its self. Warp is an example of this. Another key term is cross media ownership this is when a company makes more than one type of media product they do this by owning companies that make different media. The BBC is an example of cross media ownership. Commercial makes a profit, most companies exist to make money. A public service broadcaster is funded by public money, the BBC use this to broadcast. Finally a joint venture is when companies work with other companies, this is beneficial to both sides, Warp and Film4 have a joint venture together.

Now you know the key words lets get on with ownership! The owners of 20th Century Fox are Twenty-First Century Fox. The structure of the company is made up of lots of subsidiaries, that all do different things. This makes the company conglomerate. It has subsidiaries such as 20th Century Fox home entertainment and Blue Sky records. 20th Century Fox uses cross media ownership. It has companies in TV, film and media. 20th Century Fox has worked with Dream Works for help on distribution internationally.

Now lets move on to operating model, in the production process when making a movie the company uses the smaller organisations within the conglomerate, to produce and promote the product. All of smaller companies contribute to it. The three production stages are pre-production, production and post production. There are two ways the subsidiaries can be controlled, vertically integrated and horizontally integrated. These are beneficial to conglomerates. This means that they get more money because they don't have to out-source to promote the product. The second is the different subsidiaries that work together to create the product. Vertically is produce, distribute and consumption. Different subsidiaries work for different parts of the production stages, e.g. for production the film crew and costumes/make up will be needed to help. So different subsidiaries work at different parts of the production.

Ok over half way there! Lets talk about products. 20th century fox produces many different types of media such as film, T and magazines. But the company produces mostly films and TV. The 20th century fox logo is very well know from movies an TV shows. The most famous films made by 20th century fox are avatar, home alone, cast away and the Croods. Their products cater to a wide range of audiences, in their films; they cover all the genres of movies. Which means that most people will enjoy and want to watch their movies. This is the same case for their other products. Also with the TV products they have news channels and entertainment ones so fox cater to a big audience.

Up next Market position! We know that 20th century fox is successful because they have produced over a thousand movies. They stared off making movies like The Iron Horse, with a $280,000 budget in 1924. The most recent film they made Maze Runner budget it $30 Million. So the company has grown massively. This is because of them being part of a conglomerate. They are similar to companies like Disney in the way they work in the conglomerate this system is what makes them one of the biggest film company's. 20th century fox are successful internationally; they have the money to send out the movie in different languages and around the world.

Ok last one, Competitors! The main competitors for 20th century fox are Universal, Disney, Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures. They are all competitors of 20th century fox because they also make big budget blockbuster movies. One of things that make them individual and makes them stand out from their competitors, is fox is well know for their humour and taking the mic out of other things in the Simpsons and Family guy. Fox has are more lighthearted feel to the products it makes
