Hey, it's Hannah again.
Today we're going to talk about the movie fantastic four. The purpose of the
blockbuster movie is to entertain. This is because it's a spectacle and it has
special effects which makes people want to watch it. The genre is a scifi action hybrid . This is because the movie has special effects superpowers and an action
story line. The form is a feature film. This is because it is longer than 40
minuets. The style is unrealistic and modern. The costumes are futuristic
because they match the powers, which we don’t have the technology to do now.
They have make up that makes the thing look like a rock. The costumes match the
powers of the superheroes.
The narrative is a group of
astronauts go out to discover more of space then they are explodes to cosmic
radiation. Then it gives them powers. One of the astronauts turns evil from the
radiation and wants all the powers. So the plot is that they are at war with him.
clause Levi Strousses (1958) talked about binary opposition. Fantastic Four has
binary opposition because it is a fight between good and bad. Also the movie
fits into Todarov's theory (1977) because everything is fine, then there is
conflict finally there is calm because the villain is beaten. I will now be talking about mise-en-scene in terms of content, meaning and production. Also how this creates an understanding for the audience about the story. Now you're probably wondering what mise-en-scene is. So just to clarify mise-en-scene is how the story is told how it is shown and arranged.
The location is New York.
New York has iconography of urban life and is a very popular place, this makes
the audience want to be in New York. The location would've been chosen in pre-production,
because it is an important part. So the set could've been designed around the
place.
When choosing characters they
would've wanted to create likeable characters so they can appeal to a bigger
range of audiences. Having a muscly man will appeal to the girls. Then they
have a good-looking girl to appeal to the men watching.
There are super hero
gestures. This is preferred reading because the audience will know from the
gesture that the characters have super powers. The gestures and characters
would've been decided in the pre-production process.
The costumes and makeup are
super hero costumes. These would've been designed to appeal to the target audience.
The stereotypical costumes are slim fitting. So when the audience sees the
costume they know it is a costume. Make up is a very important part because it
can completely change an actors face. Make up is used to make characters look a
certain way The design
and making of the costume and the planning of the make up would've been done in
pre-production.
Now on to props, movies use
props to contribute something to the movie. For example in the movie it denotes a bottle of wine, this is used for the characters to find out their powers. So when Mr.
Fantastic catches the wine glass, the audience can see his arm extent. The props
would've been decided in pre-production. 23.35-23-.50
Finally on to lighting. lighting
is used to show power. the light is at the bottom of the characters this connotes
power. When the audience sees this lighting angle they will know that it means strength and power because of of the iconography linked to it. 1-30
All of the mise-en-scene characteristic would've been decided in pre-production.
All of the mise-en-scene characteristic would've been decided in pre-production.
Camera work
Now on to camera work There is a close up of the
invisible woman when she is holding back the force field. This close up is used
to show the audience her facial expression. this makes the audience empathies
with her because she is in pain. Also the fact that it is a close up when she
is using a force field. this is important because it shows the audience that it’s
hard for her to control it, and adds to the narrative . 1.28.50A panning shot is used to establish the location
also it is used to show all of the action that is going. It means that the
audience is able to see every thing that is happening. It is used to show the chaos
on the bridge. 31.48 A low angle is used to show power and dominance. because the
camera is low and looking up. From the audiences perceptive the character looks
powerful. It is used when the thing came out to help the people on the bridge. 37.48. The camera work would have been decided in preproduction
Editing
A shot reverse shot is used.
this is when two people are having a conversation and the camera is used to
show both their faces when one of them is talking. This looks very natural to the audience. It is used to make the conversation look natural. This is
used when Reed and Sue are having a conversation. 38.20
Also CGI is used to give the characters
superpowers. this makes it more believable for the audience. 46.15. The editing techniques would have been decided in preproduction.
SoundAt the beginning when the spaceship is revealed there is nondigetic sound. 7.52 Which is dramatic music. This makes the reveal look more dramatic. Also the muisc is used to introduce to space ship.
When the thing is pulling back the firetruck digetic foley sound is used.35.40 This makes the movie have more versimiltude. It adds to the narrative because by hearing the sound the audience camn tell what is happening. At the end the Thing flips over a car and there is digetic sound of women screaming this is used to show the audience that the situation is scary.1.26.27 Because of preffered reading the audience will know that it is scary. Also the screaming adds to the narrative because the sceam was because of the action. Sounds like this would have been decieded in the preproduction stages.
