Hey my name is Hannah I
work for the company cheese media. I'll be analysing the film company 20th
Century Fox. We will be looking at ownership, operating model, products, market
position and competitors. But first we need to learn key terms; conglomerate is
a big company made up of smaller companies that are called subsidiaries,
and example of this is Disney and CBS. A independent company is one that is not
owned by another company, it operates and makes products by its self. Warp is
an example of this. Another key term is cross media ownership this is when a
company makes more than one type of media product they do this by owning
companies that make different media. The BBC is an example of cross media
ownership. Commercial makes a profit, most companies exist to make money. A
public service broadcaster is funded by public money, the BBC use this to
broadcast. Finally a joint venture is when companies work with other
companies, this is beneficial to both sides, Warp and Film4 have a joint
venture together.
Now you know the key words
lets get on with ownership! The owners of 20th Century Fox are Twenty-First
Century Fox. The structure of the company is made up of lots of
subsidiaries, that all do different things. This makes the company
conglomerate. It has subsidiaries such as 20th Century Fox home
entertainment and Blue Sky records. 20th Century Fox uses cross media
ownership. It has companies in TV, film and media. 20th Century Fox has
worked with Dream Works for help on distribution internationally.
Now lets move on
to operating model, in the production process when making a movie the
company uses the smaller organisations within the conglomerate, to produce and
promote the product. All of smaller companies contribute to it. The three
production stages are pre-production, production and post production. There are
two ways the subsidiaries can be controlled, vertically integrated and
horizontally integrated. These are beneficial to conglomerates. This means that
they get more money because they don't have to out-source to promote the
product. The second is the different subsidiaries that work together to create
the product. Vertically is produce, distribute and consumption. Different
subsidiaries work for different parts of the production stages, e.g. for
production the film crew and costumes/make up will be needed to help. So
different subsidiaries work at different parts of the production.

Lets talk about products. 20th century fox produces many different types of
media such as film, T and magazines. But the company produces mostly films
and TV. The 20th century fox logo is very well know from movies an TV shows.
The most famous films made by 20th century fox are avatar, home alone, cast
away and the Croods. Their products cater to a wide range of audiences, in
their films; they cover all the genres of movies. Which means that most people
will enjoy and want to watch their movies. This is the same case for their
other products. Also with the TV products they have news channels and
entertainment ones so fox cater to a big audience.
Up next Market position! We
know that 20th century fox is successful because they have produced over a
thousand movies. They stared off making movies like The Iron Horse, with a
$280,000 budget in 1924. The most recent film they made Maze Runner budget
it $30 Million. So the company has grown massively. This is because of
them being part of a conglomerate. They are similar to companies like Disney in
the way they work in the conglomerate this system is what makes them one of the
biggest film company's. 20th century fox are successful internationally;
they have the money to send out the movie in different languages and
around the world.
Ok last one, Competitors!
The main competitors for 20th century fox are Universal, Disney, Columbia
Pictures and Paramount Pictures. They are all competitors of 20th century fox
because they also make big budget blockbuster movies. One of things that make
them individual and makes them stand out from their competitors, is fox is well
know for their humour and taking the mic out of other things in the Simpsons
and Family guy. Fox has are more lighthearted feel to the products it makes.
